lakatus,

No : As far as I'm aware : the Win 2K is not a domain controller...

I did try configuring it as such for a little while : but this still didn't solve my problems : so I took it back OUT of this role (ie demoted it : removed Active Dir from it)...

What setting / discussion makes you think it's a DC ?
(this might give a clue to what's wrong - if some setting indicates DC BUT it's not a DC)....

- User Same as ESmith user... Yup : Tried this one...
- When I look at network neighbourhood, from time to time (depending on what I've just changed) the e-smith server DOES show in the list... but as soon as you click on it Win 2K says that network path not found - and shows no shares at all...
- NTFS Permissions : Little lost : on both boxes I've checked the users I'm logged in with have corresponding same user names and passwords on the other box with sufficient privelege (ie accounts that are admins on both boxes).

Hmm : Computer name : Haven't created this in MMC...  It does seem to be on the list though...

I'm away from the computer at the moment (at work) but I'll look into this as soon as I get home...

I've also uninstalled and reinstalled TCPIP on the Win 2K box to ensure that there's no strange settings in there : it's now bog standard settings, relying on DHCP server (e-smith) to tell it everything....

Please keep suggestions coming... Getting more pieces of the puzzle and learning each time... I really appreciate the time people are giving...

Hi - I sympathise. Following thoughts my be totally offbeam but see Drew's post on registry issues with XP (and possibly 2KServer?) with Samba 2.2.7 http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=16345.msg63216#msg63216
XP requires encryption and I suspect Server may as well.
Also http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=16345.msg63216#msg63216
discusses domain issues and Darrel May has a samba howto here
http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/dmay/mitel/howto/samba-howto.html
Good luck

I just did a WinXP Pro instal and applied the registry patch that Mitel released, but still couldn't join the domain correctly (it appeared to join OK, but wouldn't work).

I checked the registry settings as per the HOWTO and found some other settings that also needed changing.

Logon to domain is working fine now.

Ray,

Where are the registry settings you tried ????

I had an interesting night last night...

I deleted and readded TCPIP to Win 2000 (well : talked my non I.T. father through it - complete with a few reboots)

I then logged onto Windows 2000 and tried :

  net use \tnsv002

and it worked... Yee Haw !!!  I then went into Explorer : and all was fine there also : all i-bays showing...

So : Finally fixed : but didn't know how... SO : I Rebooted Win 2000 to ensure it was fixed for real : and since the reboot I'm TOTALLY back to where I was before : no access to i-bays of any form even though the server shows on the list of machines within Win Explorer....  Any sort of Net Use by name OR IP address gets rejected with Error Code 53...

The other strange thing since reboot is that IPCONFIG /ALL on W2K no longer lists any WINS server... But even when I modified the TCPIP settings to tell it that my E-Smith had a WINS server it STILL didn't work...  I also checked, and the Computer Browser service is definately started on Win 2000...  I'm getting lost : specially since it was working, and a reboot has stopped it...

I've also gone through and checked the registry settings in ControlSet001, 002, 003 and the two recommended registry keys are set to 0.

I'm starting to give up...
Maybe I have SAMBA incorrectly installed (BUT : this said : I didn't change SAMBA, only rebooted Win 2000)...
I don't know...

Any suggestions as to how to reliable reinstall SAMBA, or any other suggestions as to what keys I should try would be great...  Any suggestions as to what diagnostics I could try : what sites I could go to : what listings I should post here...  I'm getting a little stumped...

Regards,

Martin

The registry settings are detailed at the end of the HOWTO
http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/dmay/mitel/howto/samba-howto.html

It sounds like you may have done them though.

I'm not sure whether it will change anything (for your particular situation) but you may like to instal the "bleeding edge" samba rpms from Charlie's site
ftp://ftp.e-smith.org/pub/e-smith/contrib/CharlieBrady/RPMS/i386/

samba-2.2.8a-1es1.i386.rpm
samba-client-2.2.8a-1es1.i386.rpm
samba-common-2.2.8a-1es1.i386.rpm

I have them installed on my local server and works OK with XP Pro & Win2K Pro w/s, using a sme as PDC.

Generally speaking I doubt the problem is with sme, more likely with W2K and how you have it set up. As you said you changed a few things and it worked, so there is your answer, look again at what you did, perhaps redo the changes taking careful note of everything you alter.
