I'm so new to linux/SME that I reek of baby powder.....but I'm wondering what programs does SME use (out of the box) for its various tasks [ie squid for proxy; iptables for firewall]?
or
Where can I get the info from?
or
what commands can I use to investigate the directory structure (I'm so new that I can't get past the text-based server manager when I telnet/ssh in)

To get passed the text-based server manager you must do one of the following.

1-On the box itself press Alt-F2 then log in as root (not admin) and use you admin password.

OR

2-SSH in and log in as root and use admin password.

Have a look at all the services that load when sme starts up (on the actual server's monitor), you can also see this in /var/log/messages

Have a look at contribs.org, there is a lot of add on rpms there, and links to other places on the net, also see

PLEASE read both the manuals (which a lot of people do not seem to do), they are online (see above) and are on the instal CD in documentation, and will give you a good understanding of how to use and set up sme server.
