Windows won't Logon
« on: May 10, 2003, 04:39:21 AM »
When I try to logon to the domain, I keep getting 'no domain to authenticate the logon'.  I cannot figure out whether it is my domain name, DHCP, LDAP, or something in SAMBA.  If I do not logon, when I try to print, a window comes up asking for a password to the printer.  What password?  Not the one assigned to me nor the admin/root password.

This is SME Server 5.6 and I am trying to logon from a Win98 Machine.

Did you set Server manager - Workgroup - Workgroup and domain controller to Yes ?
Is the Domain name, and the setting in Server manager - Workgroup - Windows workgroup the same ?

Thanks!  That did the trick.  It is a little confusing though that the Workgroup is not the same as the workgroup I set up for each Windows client.

Next steps include setting up remote access so that I can administer the server from a Windows machine, then I need to add an app that will allow each user to bring the modem up and down as they need.  I also need to stop the modem from dialing each time a client machine is rebooted.

Any help on one of these topics would be helpful.

Thanks again!

Generally it's more a case of you set your workgroup/domain name on your server first, then set all the workstations to match.
In your case you were adding the server, so it had to be set to match the existing workstations.

Look at www.dungog.net, there is something there.

I have just finished setting up a site that consists of 2 x Windows 98, 1 x Windows 95 and 1 x Windows XP Home (GROAN!)

The Win 98 machines would not logon to the domain.  Turned out to be the machines would not pick up the DHCP, so I set them to manual IP addresses and they joined the domain OK.  The Win 95 machine picked up the DHCP fine and joined the domain and the Win XP Home, although it can't join the domain (why, Microsoft, why!), picked up DHCP OK.  This is not a problem as the Win 98 machines are desktops and so won't be moved and there are only 4 workstations; it's just annoying.

Any thoughts on this?
