Restore from desktop not complete in 25 hrs
« on: May 12, 2003, 01:20:26 PM »
Dear All
I have been testing the backup/restore to/from desktop on a v5.6U4 server.

Problem is the restore does not complete even after 26 hours.

I created a desktop backup file of 31.5Mb (a basic instal with a few files in an ibay & 3 users), which only took a few minutes to backup.
The file Verified as OK.
When I try to restore the file, it appears to go through the restore process, ie after five minutes all files are displayed in the browser window, the last being /etc/smbpasswd, but no "Restore complete" words ever appear.

I have done this previously on other sme servers (5.1.2, 5.5) and it works OK, so I don't think I am doing anything wrong.

The server is low end P166 with 80Mb RAM, and the w/s is a AMD 1.8GHz with 128Mb RAM. I tried IE 5.0 & Netscape6.2 browsers but have the same problem.

Here is the first bit of the logs when the restore starts

May 10 16:54:46 server3 /etc/e-smith/web/panels/manager/cgi-bin/backup[3039]: /etc/e-smith/restore: OLD restore=status|finish|0|start|1052538478|state|idle
May 10 16:54:47 server3 /etc/e-smith/web/panels/manager/cgi-bin/backup[3039]: /etc/e-smith/restore: NEW restore=status|finish|0|start|1052538478|state|running
May 10 16:54:47 server3 /etc/e-smith/web/panels/manager/cgi-bin/backup[3039]: /etc/e-smith/restore: OLD restore=status|finish|0|start|1052538478|state|running

May 10 16:54:47 server3 /etc/e-smith/web/panels/manager/cgi-bin/backup[3039]: /home/e-smith/configuration: OLD bootstrap-console=service|ForceSave|no|Run|no|status|enabled
May 10 16:54:47 server3 /etc/e-smith/web/panels/manager/cgi-bin/backup[3039]: /home/e-smith/configuration: NEW bootstrap-console=service|ForceSave|no|Run|yes|status|enabled
May 10 16:54:47 server3 e-smith[3041]: Processing event: pre-restore

and five minutes after the restore begins I see these final entries in the/var/log/messages file.

May 10 16:58:02 server3 e-smith[3084]: Running event handler: /etc/e-smith/events/post-upgrade/S95reset-unsavedflag
May 10 16:58:03 server3 mysqld: Stopping MySQL:  succeeded

May 10 16:58:04 server3 mysqld: Starting MySQL:  succeeded

but then nothing for the next 25 hours (or more) except a log rotate messge (it was a Sunday).

Can someome tell me if they have tried a successful restore from desktop on a 5.6U4 server ?

Thanks & Regards

Hi,
I have had the same problem with my sme5.6 box.
In fact, it seems that the 5.6 upgrade didn't improve much.
I actually think it slowed down performance.

Hi,

The issue of backup/restore seems problematic at the least judging by the posts on the subject.
I have a  1Ghz P4 128Mb Ram and 40Gb IDE HD ; I tested a backup/restore to ws ( backup file of 142MB ).
The browser window showed the last file etc/smbpasswd and below this ; Restore complete.
I re-installed 5.6 and ran the restore from desktop ; all files restored ok .
Is this not maybe a case of insufficient RAM ( noticed on other posts re installing 5.6 needing + - 128Mb ).
Hope this does't just muddy the pond further.

Well at least you proved it does work.
Just out of interest (ie wondering if there is a browser issue at all), what web browser did you use on your workstation to perform the restore via server manager ?

Using IE 5.00 on W2K pro. I've got my test machine loaded with about 1.2Gb backup file that I want to test to ws.
