Ok, now I understand you setup ignore option 4, as your remote machine and e-smith will sit on the same subnet. I have to admit I am not sure what is going on, I can not see what is wrong.

If you have setup e-smith as server-only I don't think it is very save to run it without a firewall. I don't know the cisco at all, but I hope it does run a firewall otherwise your e-smith box is exposed to the whole internet and that is not a very comfortable idea. I use ipcop as my firewall, it is free and will run on very cheap (and old) hardware, might be worth considering, but that will not solve your problem (unless your box has been compromised, in which case rebuilding it would solve the problem).
