how to get sme to update dyndns
« on: June 07, 2003, 01:55:37 AM »
About a month ago I posted a message asking about the best way to know what my dynamic IP addresss is when changed. One of the responses was to use DYNDNS. I did this it worked pretty well, and I liked being able to remember just the domain name. However, my IP address changed twice in the last 2 weeks, but dyndns didn't pick up the changes. I was under the impression that the sme server sent a message automatically to dyndns for me. Am I wrong in this assumption? And if so, what can I do to get my IPs changed automatically?

this is true it does update the service. how are you setup? meaning frm wall to server. I am set right now modem -> ap/router -> where the ap is acting as dhcp server. before i was on dhcp service from the isp but the migrated to pppoe which causes me to only be able to use one IP. I think on mine I have to set my server as the first device and not the ap.... this will allow the service to work properly. I have since set it back to the way it was before with dhcp service from the ap and am currently testing it. what isp do you currently use??

When you enable the Dynamic DNS update in e-smith (one of your configuration items) you can select the Dynamic DNS service to update and give your username & password.

What this does is that anytime the e-smith box is given a new IP number from your ISP e-smith triggers the appropriate script in the /sbin/e-smith/dynamicdns/ directory. So if you are using any of the standard ones it's OK, but if you are using someone else (eg. zonedit) you need to have selected custom and modify the custom script in there.

Hope this helps

Hi D'Arcy,

Depending on your internet connection method, sometimes, other factors can prevent SME from detecting an IP change and therefore not update your IP address with DynDNS.

For example, using the bpalogin add-on for SME to handle cable logins with bigpond, occasionally, when Telstra goes off the air then comes back on, SME does not detect the change in IP and therefore does not trigger the update ip event. In the end, I gave up on the built in mechanism and installed ddclient then set ddclient to check my IP address from the web instead of getting it from eth1 (the external I/F). This appears to have worked out better. One added advantage of using ddclient is that you can update any domain name (your SME server does not need to be set to the domain name you are trying to update -- although this you can modify templates to workaround this).

Hope this helps.

What do you mean by "first device"? I have a dsl modem, and use pppoe, but I don't use a router. My modem is connected to my sme server first, the sme server handles the dhcp requests. the sme server is connected to a hub.

The Dynamic Update seems to be a no brainer for SME gateway/server setups but how about for server only setups behing a router?

I'm using 5.6 in server only mode and my router, SMC 7004VBR, is the DHCP server. The 5.6 box has a static internal IP.

well I mean first device after modem since its the sme box then great.. I can only talk about sme with homelinux.com are you sure the ports are open from the isp to your box to allow you to access the box?? more and more ISP's are blocking ports to prevent servers from being used.. second would be step through the settings one at a time. its what I did yesterday.. after doing that on the sme box I went into the router and found that with pppoe I had to setup UPnP ports correctly. but this will change when i put the sme box before the wap.. tell us more about your configuration..

IE gateway/server server only private gateway/server dhcp with sending pppoe eth login?? static?? ensure your user name and password is correct for the dynamic dns service.. can you log in and update your own ip by the web interface?

you would have to use one of the linux updaters from dyndns.org someone mentioned a one before. think it was ddupdate other then that with the server set static it wont allow you the dyndns settings also remember server only prevents outside access

Hi Kingnubian,

As per my earlier post, you can use ddclient in this situation as well.
