LAN eth going down frequently
« on: June 09, 2003, 07:22:33 PM »
Hi,

I'm running SME 5.6 (latest update) and I'm having a frequent problem with my SME server...

The LAN interface goes down and I can't make it start without a reboot. The Internet interface is always up and running, even when the LAN interface is down.

I don't know what might be the cause, but I suspect my NIC cards. The box is the same I originally installed SME 5.1.2, then 5.5 and lately 5.6.
The NICs are both D-LINK DFE530TX, and I'm using the via-RHINE driver...

I tried moving the NICs far apart in the motherboard, reinstalling 5.6 from scratch (it was originally an upgraded version from 5.5) and replacing the NICs (same model).

What could be the problem ??

Have you tried changing the port on the hub/switch to which you connect your server?  Replaced the cable?

Hi,

Yes... I've tried changing the port on the switch.
It only started happening, after I've installed v5.6...

TIA,

Paulo

I guess the obvious choice would be to swap out the LAN NIC, or is there some reason you can't?

Hi,

I guess I could (and should) do that, but ... it was working before !!
I was just wondering if there was a fix for it, before I go look for some other brand of NIC, since I believe it's a driver problem...

Thanks anyway for your help,

True, but the best solution for you is very likely to be to replace the NIC.

But check first that you are using the correct driver:

Alright,

I'll buy a new NIC (not DLink) and hope the stability comes back!

Thanks for all your answers,

I have seen something similar on my 5.6 test box when I change settings using the server console. The WAN nic functions after a reboot, but the LAN nic sometimes doesn't come up for 30 minutes. The nics are identical and swapping them yields the same result. The last time it happened I logged into the server to ping the ip address of the LAN nic and it started working again.
