Topic: XP cant join domain or see server in workgroup

I have pretty much everything working on the server now, proxy, email, web. But I cannot for the life of me get my XP box to either join the domain or see the server either by \ipadress or \servername I can ping the server though.

Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

When I try to join the domain I get:

The domain name pybe might be a NetBIOS domain name.  If this is the case,

(SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain pybe:

The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
(error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)

The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.pybe

Common causes of this error include the following:

- The DNS SRV record is not registered in DNS.

- One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child
zone:

pybe
. (the root zone)

Do you have the XP firewall enabled, or another software firewall running???
That may prevent access.

No there is only the one firewall between my network and the internet.

as XP & 2K also requires some registry setting changes

I have been scanning through the search for join domain and have nopt been finding things that I can relate to my xp box not seeing the SME box at all. I have now followed the samba upgrade howto and my XP box still cannot see my SME box.

Any further pointers would be great. The workgroups not there and it cant join the domain, get no such domain (see original post) \ipadress and \servername dont work but everything else does ftp http mail etc.

Most of the stuff is where they are joined to the domain or can see the workgroup but not the shares. I cant see anything. What would cause my XP box not to be able to find the SME box as the PDC?

I have applied the reg settings on the XP box, and updated samba on the SME box. Is there something I am obviously doing wrong or have missed.

Perhaps I should give up and install 2KS & EXCHG????

Do you have a wins server in your domain ? If it is the case, you ought to indicate it in the smb.conf file in order to get the netbios name of the server published on the lan.
Another trick is to manually set the name in your hosts and lmhosts files on the station.
move to c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc

Create the HOSTS file if it does not yet exist and put a line like this in it:
addressoftheserver   nameoftheserver

Create or open LMHOSTS and add

addressoftheserver   nameoftheserver  #PRE #DOM:yourdomainname

Reboot the xp and retry... you should now see the sme server in your network neigbourhood.

That's a quick'n'dirty method, but it should work fine.

Attention, do not put your modification in hosts.sam or lmhosts.sam, they are sample files only.

I only have currently the XP box the SME box and a firewall come router.

All done & no change, still cant \servername or \ipadress but can ping servername and ipadress, and http://servername/servermanager http://ipadress/server-manager work. Nothing in Network folders under workgroup. And still cant join the domain:

"A domain controller for the domain could not be contacted.
Ensure that the domain name is typed correctly."

I have tried various things mentioned in other posts to do with acess to workgroup/domian:

- Rename the PC to a user on the SME box.
- Ensure no peer-peer shares on the PC.
- Upgrade samba on the SME box.
- Rename the workgroup to ALLCAPS on PC and SME boxes.
- Ensure that only TCPIP on the network.
- Registry changes from Samba upgrade HOWTO.

Please send more advise.

I have managed to get the XP box joined! I enabled NETBIOS over TCPIP and voila!

I cant belive it was that bloody simple!

Netbios over tcp/ip is standard...

Dont know, never touched network settings on it before now. Seemed to work before sharing files with my RH laptop.....

BTW it doesn't mention NETBIOS in any of the manuals.....
