dyndns help
« on: June 25, 2003, 02:57:05 AM »
Hi All,
I have created an account at dyndns.org and added my sme5.5 as a host, I am using a cable modem, I have gone through the configuration on the server and added the details as required. If I go to http://myaccount.homelinux.com from a PC on my network it goes to my sme default web page, but if I do the same on a external machine over the internet I get a search page come up telling me that the domain cannot be found. Have I missed something here? Any help would be appreciated.
Regards,
Del

Ian

Is the domain of your sme set to myaccount.homelinux.com ?

That was the problem when I first used dyndns.

Hi Del,

Check that the External IP address of your server (find it in Server Manager -> Configuration -> Review Configuration) matches the dyndns IP address record. If you update the dyndns IP address from one of your network clients, it sometimes auto-detects the IP address of any proxy that your cable provider uses, not the IP address of your server.

And, as Ian said, check that your server's domain name is the same as the dyndns domain name you are redirecting to your SME box.

Hi Ian & Andy,
No my domain name isn't set to mydomain.homelinux so I will try this today. I went to a web site http://whatsmyip.org to get my IP address but I will follow Andy's suggestion to check it out. Thanks, I will report back soon.

Hi,
I have followed your suggestions but I am still having the same problem except I have discovered that if I use https:// instead of http:// it works OK So I think I must have something not set right, maybe under remote access? I am not sure where to look so any ideas would appreciated.
Again thanks for your help,

Sounds like your ISP's blocking port 80.

Hi Dan,
I am using Roadrunner, can I do anything about it?

Get a better ISP, or complain to Roadrunner (except that their TOS prohibits servers, so you probably won't get far).

Hi Dan,
I have tried Road Runner and they said I need to upgrade to business class with a fixed IP, so I will start looking for a better ISP, any suggestions in Central Florida? Is dsl as easy to set up as cable? Then I could try BellSouth.
Thansk again for all your help,
Del

If they serve your area, I'd take a look at Speakeasy (speakeasy.net).  They're not the cheapest, but they seem to work very well, and their terms are very reasonable.

Hi Dan,
Speak Easy isn't available in my area yet but BellSouth DSL is and they said they don't block any ports so I will probably end up with them if I don't find any one else.
Thanks for all your help,

del,
I had the same problem with RR in Houston.  I switched to Earthlink on TimeWarner cable.  Same equipment and billing account, but better TOS.  Basically Earthlink says run whatever you want as long as it is non-commercial and doesn't hog bandwidth.  They even have some promotional offer so it's cheaper for a few months.  Some downsides are... earthlink mail has more spam "who cares when you run your own mail server",  newsgroups are slow and you must authenticate.  Other than those issues, everything works fine.

Thanks,

dale
