However i do have problems with this comment:

UPS's either use comms via protocols (RS232C, USB, SNMP) or level detect. If protocols are being used then any data that can be sent via USB can also be sent by RS232 (USB = Universal *Serial* Bus after all). Now APC may *choose* to use the connections diferrently, but that's why I avoid APC UPSs (plus the way they trash batteries, but that's JAOBOE).
And a comment: All the 'eye candy' is completely unimportant: what is required is for the UPS to cleanly shut down the server once the utility power has failed and some other criterion (timeout or battery level) is exceeded. If it does that it is doing its job. If the dumb cable does that it's smart enough.
