apcupsd with USB Nobreaks (600ES and 500CS)
« on: June 26, 2003, 04:31:48 PM »
Hi everyone (specially Mr. Darrel May)

I´m trying to do my new APC BackUPS 600ES works with apcupsd.

Using dmc-e-smith-apc3855 + apcupsd3.10.5 (to support USB)
changed /home/e-smith/apcupsd to have usb as cabletype and upstype and using 940-0127C as cable!
It don´t boot up... I have to enter in single mode to remove rc7.d S99apcupsd link!

I saw a Darrel message about to use Backups 500ES... my it´s very close that... Darrel what cable number are you using?

Where I can find a apcupsd-10.x.RPM (they with USB support, and I´m too newbie to use .tar files!) to test with 600ES and with others 500CS I and my client owns?

 Anyone has this working?

Thanks

Jáder

Backups cs models will work with the cable and settings defined at this link

http://www.sibbald.com/apcupsd/manual/cables.html

Use

Hope this helps

Rob,

This will work in dumb mode... no UPS load info, no battery capacity graphs...

I was unable to do the Custom RJ45 cable work (I have built and tested it).
The apcupsd denies to load with errors... once I have a so serious problem I have to boot in single mode to remove startup of service!

Have your SEEN this kind of UPS (500CS or 600ES) working with apcupsd ?

Darrel May contrib it´s WONDERFUL but his RPM is apcupsd 3.8.5 and this one do not support USB. My APC contact say that serial cables cannot send ALL signal as USB cables send. So THE EASIEST WAY should to be apcupsd >=3.9.8 installed because it supports USB UPS...

BRIAN: USB cables like 940-0127A/B/C has one RJ one side and a USB connector on another!

I can't help you with your problem, though will run into it soon no doubt :-) However i do have problems with this comment:

>My APC contact say that serial cables cannot send ALL signal as USB cables >send.

UPS's either use comms via protocols (RS232C, USB, SNMP) or level detect. If protocols are being used then any data that can be sent via  USB can also be sent by RS232 (USB = Universal *Serial* Bus after all). Now APC may *choose* to use the connections diferrently, but that's why I avoid APC UPSs (plus the way they trash batteries, but that's JAOBOE).

And a comment: All the 'eye candy' is completely unimportant: what is required is for the UPS to cleanly shut down the server once the utility power has failed and some other criterion (timeout or battery level) is exceeded. If it does that it is doing its job. If the dumb cable does that it's smart enough.

Just my 2c.

I have a 500 CS sitting here in smart mode with UPS load info, graphs, etc using the cable and settings specified in my other post

Could you please post:
A) from your apcupsd.conf file:
Cable type
UPS Type
port
NISPORT

B) version and patch of your SME
C)results of   ´cat /proc/bus/usb/devices´
D) results of rpm -qa|grep apcupsd
E) Code number of your APC cable (or do you use custom RJ cable?)

I´m really curious why I cannot do my custom RJ45 work like mentioned on cables page of manual!

And at my home I have one Back-UPS 600ES (maybe a Brazilian version of 500ES...) and it neither shows in cat /proc/bus/usb/devices!!

Thanks!

The custom cable is a serial not a USB cable. You coose the correct serial port (probably tty0) in the apcupsd settings in the server manager.

As I say, I have a CS not an ES.

Hope this helps

I know... but using a USB cable I should see the UPS on usb devices list... but mine do not show.

I have tried Custom RJ45... and don´t work either...

What parameters are you using with your custom rj45 cable on your 500CS model? UPSType, cable ?

I have an 600ES... and APC support say it´s a Brazilian model... not a standard model... so maybe to me will take some time more... but I have 4 other 500CS on clients...
