I have installed SME 5.5 on a machine with two nics; one for the internal network and one for the external (ADSL).  Our ISP is Demon.  They have allocated me a static IP (for examples sake 1.1.1.10).  This is also our mailgate IP - according to Demon.  The internal network is (for example) 2.2.2.222.  Demon host our www site - mysite.com.

The external nic is plugged into the ADSL router.  A firewall is also plugged into the ADSL router.  The firewall is also plugged into our internal hubs.  Everyone can see the internet.  The SME server can see the internet through the external nic using the external gateway 1.1.1.9.  The firewall has an IP of 1.1.1.11

I have named the SME server as mysite.com (the same as our hosted www site).  It has a virtual domain called mysite.biz (to cover our .biz name).  The SME server is configured as a server gateway and mail is setup as Standard.

I can send mail out from the internal network through the external network to Demon.  I have checked the headers of the sent mail and it defininely shows it going through our mailgate.

However, this machine will not pick up e-mail.  Its not that it is rejecting it, it simply is not picking any up.  I have checked with Demon's network tools and that shows that mysite.com has an IP of 1.1.1.10 - our mailgate.

I really want to use SME server as our mail server, but I am becoming more and more disaffected and now have very little hair left to pull out.  So, for the sake of my remaining hair, what the hell am I doing wrong?

TIA

Paul,

Sounds like you will have to do some port forwarding on your ADSL router, the mail is probably being stopped there, you will need to forward it to your SME.

How is your mail arriving - over port 25, delivered by demon, or are you expecting the server to poll demon's mail server?

If the former, then you must forward port 25 to the SME server from the firewall, if the latter, then you must set up SMEserver to poll the mail server in the server manager/email panel.

Hope this helps

Actually re-raading your posting, I am confused as to how you have the firewall plugged in.

I would have expected you to put the firewall in between the ADSL router/modem and the SMEServer, but you seem to have both plugged into the ADSL router/modem.

Does seem a rather odd arrangement of kit. SME is pretty damn secure so why bother with the second firewall in parallel with the SME box? Normal arrangement would be ADSL router > SME external NIC. SME internal NIC  >  hub/switch > workstations.

I suspect that the ADSL router needs to be set to forward port 25 to the SME box.

Hi,

If I were you I would reinstall SME and configure it to use the server only mode - i.e, does not bother regarding sorting out the ADSL side of things.  Then use one nic which connects to the hub/ADSL router.  You should then port forward on the ADSL router port 25 and 80 to the sme box.  If you give us the domain name it will be easier to see where mail and www is being directed externally.
