Topic: Stupid Newbie Question

I am rather new to this, so please bear with me.

I just got through the instalation of the v5.5 server. I did not see any error messages during the install process, but after the initial reboot, I found myself at a prompt: Plaese Login _

Now, I can find no documentation as to any default logins, and any that I have tried did not get me into the server. These include: Sys, System, Admin, Administrator, Root, sysadmin, letmethehellin, enter, logon, login, enter. And a few profane ones as well.

Is this normal, and what may I be missing?

Wisper,

You can login as admin with the admin password you setup during the install and that will give you the admin console, which you can use to reconfigure your server and other streamlined tasks.

Or you can login as root with the admin password and get a command prompt, from here you can do anything you want, but before making any huge changes you should read up on SME's templating system, http://www.e-smith.org/custom .

well, problem is, during instalation, at no time was I asked to set/input any user id's or passwds. I was prompted for such things as language, timezone, and weather or not I was wishing to upgrade or full install. But that is it. And after the install was finished, and the system rebooted, I was met with a black screen with localhost login: _ with a blinking cursor. No GUI, or prompt for setting anything as far as passwords, users, networking, ISP, IP's....nothing.

Did I miss something here?

Sigh - this takes me back as I too had to post to find how to get to a command prompt. admin gets you to server console menu and root to a shell command prompt. Both are case sensitive and share the same p/w. root is more useful. At a command prompt type mc return to get midnight commander which allows you to view, move and edit files. Also investigate web access http://yourservername_or_ip/server-manager which gets you to a useful menu and where you will find controlling interfaces for modules that you may care to add. Check out http://contribs.org. Here you can add to the basic sme functionallity by adding modules to control services and ports and all sorts of other neat stuff.
The manual seems a little hard to find these days http://edocs.mitel.com/6000_SME_Server/smeserveruserguide/English/index.html and associated 6000 documents.

Ok firstly are you upgrading? Because I cant remember seeing the prompt for upgrade or full install on all the clean install's I have done.

If it is an upgrade you will need to find out what the admin password was, it will be the same.

Getting to the server console is what I am after. So I understand that after completion of the instalation, loging in as admin will get me to said console. But as I was never asked to specify any passwords, I am at a loss as to how to log in as anything.

I assume there must be a default login for the initial setup, but this I cannot find in any documentation. So, after the first reboot after instalation of this server, im still staring at "localhost login:_" feeling rather dumb.

No it is not an upgrade from any previous version. Upon the origional instalation, I thought something might have gone rong to cause this, so I reinstalled. That is where I was prompted to either type more options for a clean install, or press "Return" to continue. So it was that, Lang, Location (I assume for timezone reasons) and then it installs. From there I am asked to create a boot disk, and once that is done, press Return to reboot and remove the CD.

Once it has rebooted, I get a black screen with: localhost login:_

Nothing allowing me to specify any passwords or configuration for the system at all.

So, at this point, I seem to have the server installed, but I cannot login to the server to configure it after the instalation.

Seems as is the install hasn't properly completed. There was a similar issue with a Linux Format magazine cover disc version a while back. Now trying to find the fix on this site but can't, neither can google...

It was orginally posted to the homepage but there is no search engine on www.e-smith.org or a link to an index of articals posted to the homepage that I can find.

You need to run a couple of the scripts after loging in as root and the default password. All the info is in the artical if  it can be found. B-(

I'd suspect a bad install CD here.  Or an improperly set-up hard drive; what was on it before?  Can you use a drive utility to completely wipe it ("write zeroes") before installing?

That means your install/post-install configuration did not complete successfully.

Did you remove CD after initial install or it boot second time from the CD?
If you removed CD, the first boot of the system should start with post install wizard and first question would be to input password for admin.
It probably will be faster to just reinstall it again and make sure that you select "Install" and not default "upgrade" option from the menu.

First off, thanx to all for the input. And please excuse if I did not explain the apparent problen too well initially.

In the time since the first two instalations, I started to suspect something might not me right with the HDD or the disk. I downloaded, and installed both version 5.6 and v5.1.2(?) and a second download of v5.5. I was not able to try all three, just 5.6 & 5.1.2(?). Both versions would not even finish the install process. So I am almost convinced I have a bad HDD, or it does need, as Michael suggested, a good set of 1's & 0's to chew on. And to answer the question, it did have winXP on previously.

I just left it to the install disk to take care of the formatting. If 1's & 0's dont work, I'll make the attemp at a secondary HDD. I'll post back with the results.

I have encountered problems with HDD's that are NTFS, you need to boot to a dos disk (or a win95/98 boot disk) and you could try fdisk to delete the existing partitions although I use a utility call delpart which can be downloded from: http://hercules.lss.ksu.edu/download/MSSTUFF/

It was the HDD after all. I did a zero-fill on it with Maxtor's own utility, and after that, v5.5 of the server installed without a hitch.
