Long file name support

I have looked at the online manual at Mitel but can't find any reference to file name support. Does 6.0xx support long file names?

Linux has always supported long file names. Where/how exactly did you want to see the long file names?

I have a situation where several applications, Tax
Wise Peachtree Accounting and Quickbooks experience
data base corruption errors when thier data is kept on
an e-smith server running 4.1.2. The workstations are
all running Windows 2000.  I am not certain it is a
long file name issue. However, in the case of Tax Wise
it appears to be because the workstation can't file
certain files. The problems with Peachtree and
Quickbooks are sporatic. Since they work for periods
of time without data base corruption problems I assume
that the file names are not the issue. Our solution
has been to use another workstation as a database
server with applications that have problems running on
e-smith. We use the e-smith server for applications
that don't experience errors.
I have been watching the release notes for sometime
and noticed that work has been done regarding NTFS
compatibility. ego my question.

Well, 4.1.2 is an _ancient_ version of e-smith.  Any problems with windows file sharing would involve Samba, which has been updated considerably by 5.6, the current version.  Linux has support long file names since before kernel v1.0, IIRC.

Thank you for your reply. 4.1.2 has always been so stable that I have not updated it if I wasn't experiencing problems. But I am so guess its time to do the upgrade.

Well, I suggested that you can move to 5.5 if you just need a good long file name support.  I have see at lease 3-4 success story on thsi forum moving from 4.xx to 5.5.  But got too many upset post for 5.6 onwards.....

I have 6 SME 5.5 box and all running so well that I rather not to up grade them......

I have do some test on 5.6...... not very happy with it as I feel not needing any Ext 3 or 2.4 Kernal...... but I think I rather keep the good old 5.5 running smothly.....

Best Regards,

Paul

Thanks for the info. I was about to give 6.0 a try. However, think I will stick with 5.5

Please reconsider. If you try 6.0beta, and report any malfunction to smebugs@mitel.com, you will be helping with development. If you stick with 5.5, you won't be helping with development, and you will likely have a less secure server - Mitel does not plan to release any further updates for 5.5.

Not a problem, Charlie. I will put up the 6.X beta. I am always happy to help do what I can with development. The SME server is a great product and having used it since almost the beginning I still feel it is one of the best available.
