Can't ping LAN side of server.
« on: July 22, 2003, 02:30:08 AM »
Hi

I have installed 5.6 with all updates as a Dedicated Sever/Gateway on a Dell PowerEdge 500SC.  I am using DHCP to configure workstations and that seems to work fine.  However, when I try to ping or otherwise access the internet or eth0 on the server from the workstations nuttin works not even PING. I can ping another workstation on the network through a D-Link switch but not the server and I  see that they get configured by DHCP by doing ipconfig so I am assuming that the path, cabling and hardware are ok.  I even re-installed twice with different copies of 5.6 and switched the NIC cards around so that one is on the internet side and the other on the network side.  Both times I was able to access the internet but not eth0.  Is there something about Dell servers that don't like E-Smith/SME 5.6 Server?  The server is using an Adaptec 39160 SCSI adapter with 2 SCSI drives and I did install software raid nothing else unique about the combination that I can see.  I tried a couple of searches but nothing seemed to fit so any assistance will be greatly appreciated.   8^/

TIA  Wildkow

Public Server & Gateway, or Private Server & Gateway?  When in private mode the server will not allow outbound pings, or respond to incoming pings.  If it's in Public mode it should allow and respond both ways...

It is a Public Server and Gateway.

These are not outbound pings I'm just trying to ping eth0 on the server from a workstation on the LAN side of the network or from the server to the workstation.   I am pinging the ip address and get "Destination Host Unreachable" even though the card gets configured by DHCP correctly.  I can ping from one workstation to another.  But not to the server or from the server.  Is that weird?  Everything else is fine I can ping the internet from the server and I have checked both NIC's by reversing which is LAN side and which is internet side and both work to ping the internet.

Sounds like the subnet mask or something else in the servers network setup is wrong.

Thanks for you time.  I know it is something simple or something stupid that I have or have not done.  Just banging my head on the wall trying to figure it out.

Doh!  Got it, I used the same subnet on both interfaces.  Sigh!

Hi!
I got a question, cause I got the same problem.
But I have to use the following configuration:
Local: 192.168.0.8 Subnetmask: 255.255.255.0
External: 192.168.144.160 Subnetmask: 255.255.255.0

Why can't I ping the Server on 192.168.0.8?
If I change one Subnetmask to 255.255.255.1, it works perfectly, but I can't do that!
Can u help me?

I can't think of any reason why you can't ping the server.

Try...

Check the IP addresses on you're host machine to ensure that they are on the same network as the Local NIC on the server.

More information on your setup maybe helpful.

Sorry this took so long took off on 7/26 for a week vacation, just got back.
