Topic: failed backup

i tried using the backup feature on e-smith 3.1 from a client machine on my network.  my server has roughly 17GB of data to backup.  it didn't work.

My client machine is w2000.  Bootdrive is 4Gb, Datadrive is 25GB.  Temp dir set to c:/temp/blahblah...  I wanted to send the backup file from e-smith to my Datadrive, but when the bootdrive fills up (where Tempdir is) the computer crashes.  Tried it twice already.

does anybody know how i can get the backup data to skip the copy to my tempdir? I just want it to go to Datadrive.

are there any other ways to backup all this data?, ultimately, i want to install e-smith 4 on a larger drive and restore all my users and settings from the 3.1 machine.

Microsoft OS-s (and Microsoft Explorer) always use temporaly directory, even if you set it to be only 1Mb, it would be used. So if you want to back up 17Gb of data, you need at least 34Gb HDD (or 17 free on target drive + 17gb for temporaly file on any drive(where your temporaly directory is set).

i figured that i needed a really huge drive to backup the data and config.  now my only problem that i wanted to set up a 60 gig drive on e-smith... i don't think 120 gig drives will be available any time in the next 3 months though. my boss is especially nervous about putting data on a server that i can't back up.

e-smith is a great product.  unfortunately, the cost of the hardware really piles up if this is the only way to back up huge amounts of data.

if i find anything to fix this, i'll keep you posted.
