mail error, reading data from host
« on: July 25, 2003, 10:07:14 PM »
I use Apple's mail.app to manage several mail accounts. I have SME 5.6 installed with webmail enabled.

Occasionally, I get the following error from the server:

"The server error encountered was: Reading data from host bigmac.mydomain.com failed."

Of the five user accounts I have defined in the mail app, this error is raised for only one account. The others appear to retrieve their mail normally.

I have checked passwords, user names, and other account details on the client and on the mail server. The server log indicates that the pop service is being deactivated due to excessive connections. My mail.app is the only client, save for the webmail service, accessing the server.

I did recently add a new user account to the server, and also updated a user account password.

Any suggestions, links or book recommendations are most welcome.

I forgot to mention that I have Update 4 installed. I have verified the rpm's in so far as comparing the list in the update to that reported by the server manager.

The exact error message from the server messages log is:

Jul 26 09:43:01 myserver xinetd[985]: Deactivating service pop-3 due to excessive incoming connections.  Restarting in 10 seconds.
Jul 26 09:43:11 myserver xinetd[985]: Activating service pop-3
