« on: July 29, 2003, 05:25:59 PM »
Okay b4 anyone starts i am testing sme 6 in preperation to use all it's nice new features prior to its release, now pre-empting problems is the key here lets all be ready for them when allinsundary upgrade there sme boxes.

sme 6 does not support dyndns out of the box--sorry off the cd--doh iso image then if you wanna get picky!!!!
.
this is going to be a headache for lots of people... anyone done a how to yet?
anyone got a preferance on clients they have used and tested?

if someone has done it on a sme 6 box and is willing to share there secrets i will do the how to (in newbie language)....

I would rather know if i am going to have to write the how to before i do it on the test box... also unsure which client is best to use!!

advice please gents,, and ladies,,and newbies and pro's

I've used DirectUpdate on a workstation in several places successfully.  It's shareware, but quite stable and effective.

Yes.. tried that today, not impressed tried on a couple of workststions and 1 gave a very sparodic ip address.
be nicer if the sme box did the work as if the ip address changes when no workststions are on no email will be received this would be a problem for me as i do a lot of work with the other side of the world and i can envisage problems with email if the address changed overnight, unfortunately static ip is not an i option for me before someone suggests it..

I use ddclient on SME 5.6 and there is no reason why it would not work on 6.0

Its quite easy to configure and use and can simply be installed from the rpm. You can get ddclient by going to the dyndns.org web site and looking at their clients list.  I use them myself but ddclient will update all of the dns services I know.

Its free and someone here could easily make a web interface for it.

I believe there is a ddclient rpm somewhere for SME at contribs.org. Have a look.

The secret is easy. Either:

- install the e-smith-dynamicdns-* RPMs from 5.6, then re-configure via the console

or

- wait until the next 6.0 beta, which will include the missing RPMs (omitted unintentionally - they're no longer included in the ServiceLink version as ServiceLink already provides a dynamic DNS feature).

Based on the comments about ddclient, it would be a worthwhile little project for someone to build an e-smith-dynamicdns-ddclient RPM.

Good Evening,

Has anyone successfully tried the ddclient frontend from e-smith.dyndns.org? It appears to be great but I haven't had a chance to try it out yet.

A penny for your thoughts?

Sme-ddclient works great. Initially I had some problems connecting because my ISP insists on me using their proxy. A small template adding "proxy =" to ddclient.conf fixed this.
