Can't see SME on Windows XP network
« on: July 31, 2003, 05:14:25 PM »
Hello

I have just installed a 5.6 SME server into a Windows XP workgroup and we can't see or ping the SME server. It is setup as a file server only. The XP machines don't have fixed IPs and they are connected to a combination firewall, hub and router with a 19.168.0.1 IP. The server has an IP assigned to it and has the same workgroup name.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you
Greg...

Hi Terry

The network is like this...
We have a combo ADSL modem, hub and firewall in one which all of the network computers are connected to. The hub/firewall has an IP of 192.168.0.1. There are 4 PCs all running windows XP with the standard workgroup name of Mshome. When we insert the SME server (in server mode only) as a file server only, we can't wee it on the network?? I have set the workgroup name on the SME server and given it an IP of 192.168.0.99. Do we possible have to create some Ibays first and share them before it is visible?

TIA Greg

Well, 1st the pc's have to be on the same subnet.  If your networking is screwed up of course the SME won't show up.  It looks like the router internal IP and the SME IP are ok, but what about the pc's?  We need the pc's IP's!!!

If you've managed to screw up the subnets of the XP boxes the SME will treat them as a different network and will ignore requests from them (unless the IBay is set to "Entire Internet" in it's privliages section.

An assumption I am using here is that you are looking within the local lan, not from the outside world.  If you're talking from the LAN side of the router you'll be getting into port forwarding.  Get it?

Thank you for your help Terry.
The problem was there was no sub mask or IPs set on the XP PCs. A trap for a green horn.... The assumption was the XP PCs could still see the SME server as the workdroup name was defined OK. Hopefully other newbies will learn somehting from this as well...

Hence why I wanted the details.  :)  DHCP is a wonderful thing, keeps ya from making small mistakes like that.

I'm having the same problem, but I'm using SME in server/gateway mode with DHCP. Any suggestions?

On the XP PC go to a command prompt and type: ipconfig /all and you will see the full network settigns on your computer, this may help in finding the problemMark Allison wrote:

I've checked, and they look right.  I'm using DHCP to assign the IP info.
