A little background first...
For the past 18 months or so, I have been using a stock RH7.2 server to host the ASPseek engine on
http://www.edseek.org. This was part of a project to index the existing web content found on "educational" servers in Illinois. (See the Edseek site for more background and
http://www.aspseek.org for more about this excellent tool).
Back to the story...recently, that machine was causing me to spend way too much time on admin issues, so I decided it was time to migrate the site to SME/E-smith. I did the porting and testing and script development on a couple of test machines and then finally did the full-scale conversion on the production site this week. The results? Everything appears to be working great!
If you would like to give it a try in your SME/E-smith world, here's the how-to:
http://www.tech-geeks.org/contrib/mdrone/aspseek/aspseek-on-esmith-howto.txtI would be very interested in suggestions for improvement and to hear how it works. Right now, the installation is partially automated (there are two scripts that take care of RPM installation and template mods), yet there are a number of "manual" operations that the site administrator must complete.
I highly recommend that you try this on a test box prior to putting it into production. You should also read the ASPseek web pages related to modifying the /etc/aspseek/aspseek.conf and /etc/aspseek/s.htm files. You might want to start with a few local web sites to "get your feet wet", so to speak.
Enjoy,
