It's probably the file that's corrupt rather than the md5sum program. I used the "reget" command in ftp to get the rest of the file after a connection failure and I believe what that does is check the filesize of the source file against that of the destination file and stop downloading when they're the same. So it's no surprise that my download has the correct byte size but can still have a different md5sum. I won't tax e-smith's ftp server any more through my crappy connection and have asked a friend with a better isp to get the image for me.
