I can not find the option in my server panel on where to turn the abiltiy to access the server via telnet on or off.  I am using 6.0b3.

How many times does it need to be said?  ALL ISSUES WITH THE 6.0 BETA SHOULD BE REPORTED TO SMEBUGS@MITEL.COM.

Though personally, I don't think this is a problem at all--just use SSH.  Clients are available for just about every OS in existence (including at least one java-based client), so that shouldn't be a problem.

If you can't find something, that's an issue.  In this case, it appears that they removed the option for telnet access--and good for them, IMO, though YMMV.

Exactly. It was removed intentionally. I have yet to see a reasonable argument to keep it, beyond stubborn resistance to change.  SSH is available to all platforms I know of, for free, and it does everything telnet can do, and more. I keep a telnet client around for debugging daemons, but telnetd's use is not recommended anymore.

In that case, just install webconsole on your server (http://www.star-support.com/downloads/mitel/contrib/webconsole/). This will give you an ssh terminal on any webbrowser that supports java. No need for any software installation on the client.

Okay, I got it ... set up a GoToMyPC account to get to your home computer, then SSH wherever you need to go.

Ian -- I have the solution for you. But first...

[rant]
Good grief! I wish you telnazis would go away. If the someone wants/needs to run telnet, that is their business, not yours. If you don't want to use it, don't. Be happy in the knowledge that YOU have seen the light. But don't try to force your bigotry on everyone else. I've had sysadmins tell me that they'll not permit ssh access because ssh is insecure -- "You know, OpenSSH has been exploited, so we don't allow it here..." -- so we are forced to use telnet and ftp!!! Stupid, yes, but there is a thing out there called "The Real World" and it is filled with all kinds of less than ideal scenarios. What we need is flexibility, not technorighteousness.

Anyway, I'm sure most of you telnazis still operate those evil fossil fuel powered vehicles, so just how sincere is your zealotry to not use out of date technology? :-)
[/rant]

Ian, telnet support is still there. You just can't ENABLE it from the web manager. If you DO enable it, the web manager will then tell you it is enabled, in pretty red text, and nag you to turn it off. Ignore that ;~)

To turn on telnet, you'll need the command prompt:

--------------------

/sbin/e-smith/db configuration setprop telnet status enabled PermitRootLogin yes access private

/sbin/e-smith/signal-event remoteaccess-update

--------------------

BTW, telnet was broken in 6.0 prior to 6.0b3.

I may be wrong, but I believe Putty will fit on a floppy. Run it from there. Or, a CD-ROM, USB memory stick, or whatever. It's a good idea to keep an ssh client with you. You never know what foreign computer you may have to use.

I cannot in good conscience recommend telnet. Period.

I don't understand the issue anyway. We build on RedHat 7.3. Even if telnetd was not available, you are welcome to grab whatever packages from RedHat you like, and make your server as insecure as you wish. Don't ask me to help.

This is a useless analogy. ssh is proven, free, available technology that is completely practical. Give me a proven, non-free, available alternative to internal combustion that is completely practical and I will use it. As this is grossly off-topic, mail me offline if you have one.
