Topic: Maximum hard drive size

Hi!  I was wondering if an 80 gb hard drive was too large for linux??  I had seen on the internet that LILO has trouble with drives that are too big?

Nope, not too big for Linux.  Might be too big for your motherboard to recognize, though.

Ok. thanks for the quick reply.. How would I know if it is too big for the mother board?

If your motherboard sees it, it isn't too big.  If not, it is--there may be a BIOS update available that would fix it.  If you don't have the drive yet to test, check the m/b docs, or ask the manufacturer.

I will have to check and find out the motherboard details and research about it.  You're right, i don't have the hard drive to test yet.

Are you adding the drive as a second Hard disk
I have a seagate 80Gb and I could not add the drive to Redhat 9 but I could install linux on the drive just not install as soecond HD

No, it's not a second drive.  I currently have an ~2 gb hd and I am going to do a fresh sme 5.6 install on the 80 gb hd and use the server-manager's restore from desktop backup option to restore the website and mount the ~2 gb if I need to.

E-smith 5.6 can handle 80gig drives. My box currently has three 80 gig drives running although a fresh install should have only one installed then add later and adjust the fstab config file accordingly.

The only limitation as mentioned already is your MB bios but even if that doesn't work  you should be able to purchase an ATA card from your local computer store.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I seem to recall linux (in general) has a theoretical limitation of 360gig drive size.

I've found a trick for those annoying times the HD won't be recognized. Just set it to Cable Select\CS. Works every time. I've used a 40GB drive on a P133.
