help setup dlink 300+ and dynamic ip
« on: August 31, 2003, 09:45:00 PM »
Hi,
Has any one installed dlink 300+ with dynamic Ip.
I would like some help. I have looked through previous forum posts but could not find any clear answer to suite.
I've just received a dlink 300+ adsl modem. I'm dumping dial up. My e-smith is 5.6 with all updates installed. The server is used for internal dhcp, data storage, Internet gateway for only local win & lin computers only.
I have two working nic's eth0 & eth1 in the server and the internal network works fine, all internal computers can log in to the the server.
I know the 300+ works with pppoe as I set it up in a win box to test.
What is the best way to set it up for e-smith with a dynamic ip account for my isp.

Regards
Nick

Hi Nick,
First with adsl you have a static IP i believe. To get the modem to work connect it to a pc and http to 192.168.0.1 and change it to a bridged modem them set esmith to PPOE and you should be up and running in no time. Contact me if you need any more info. We have 3x 300+ modems woking on 3 sites very well.

Hi Jeff,
Thanks  for the quick response.  My account with telpacific in Australia is a.... dynamic one..... I set the modem up with your help and I was able to get on the web and share the connection. But there are some points I would like cleared up.

1 . With dynamic Ip does the e-smith server with ( pppoe & the modem bridged) find the new ip from my Isp automatically when ever it is changed. And how quick will it do it.

Last night it would not connect after working well for a while. E-smith would not release the external ip and find the new one given by the Isp. I unplugged the modem from the server into a win box and was able to use the web. When I plugged it back in to the server the External IP address (When looking through server manager) had not changed consequently not ably to use the web. I turned off the modem and went to bed. This morning I turned on the modem and  it's working again with a new ip address shown in server manager. I
2. Is there a better way with dynamic Ip.

2.This is the readout  ifconfig ( the internet is working well at this point  ). Eth1 is the internel network.
Is this how it should look?
