Have managed to access my SQL server on Win2000 on the network at work from home. I used a VPN dialup into the E-Smith gateway via the PPTP as provided, but can only get in using 'Admin' and the system password - using other user names and passwords won't work - I'd be happy to delve into the linux scripts if someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks.

Are you logged into your home computer with a valid username and password for your e-smith gaeway?

I am a newbie to linusx and pptp also, and was having a similar problem trying to connect with pptp

Thanks Bob,  - no, I'm not. The VPN connection asks for username and password after I've connected to the external IP of the ADSL modem at work, then logs me onto the network  as 192.168.0.250 which I think the PPTP assigns.

Try setting yourself up with the user name and password that is valid on the e-smith box. That was about the final step for me. Also see the pptp fix at http://contribs.org. On the opening page, about halfway down is a temporary fix for pptp connectivity problems

Thanks bob and cosy - all working well now.
Setup is: Client: Win2000 logged on (lower case) with user and password same as user setup on e-smith gateway. Using windows VPN. Running SQL client.

Server end: Peer-peer windows network, mottley bunch of computers running 98,98se,me and windows2000, fronted by e-smith 5.6 u4 box as gateway connected to ADSL modem with fixed IP. MSDE running on win2000 box. User and password into win2000 box same as client and e-smith. hosts file in c:\winnt includes name of win2000  box and IP.

With this can see windows network from outside and run the SQL client. Great!
