Install error on Intel Nightshade N440BX
« on: September 19, 2003, 04:10:41 AM »
I'm trying to install E-Smith v5.6 on an Intel Nightshade N440BX dual PII motherboard using the onboard SCSI. The system boots, switches to the graphical install, then sits there trying to load the Symbios SCSI driver. I've left it in that state for up to an hour so it's not a delay issue.

Current configuration is:
2 x PII-400 CPUs (matched)
256MB PC100
2 x 9.1GB UW SCSI drives (IDs 0 & 1)
Pioneer CD-ROM SCSI (ID 5)

The intention is to set up these two drives as a mirrored pair with the base OS installed, then add 4 more 9.1GB drives as storage for the I-bays.

Anyone have a suggestion to resolve the apparent Symbios driver issue?

Try 6.0beta3. It has much more recent hardware support.

also build the raid using a hardware raid card rather than the onboard Symbios (if the budget will stretch) - it is superior in most if not all ways to software raid.

Neatly sidesteps the issue down't ya think :-)

I'm currently waiting on a Mylex DAC960 RAID controller to arrive, but wanted to get this system up and running first, then migrate the data across.

The problem is not the RAID solution, but rather that the installation doesn't seem to properly recognise the onboard SCSI controller (which I'll still be using for the SCSI CDROM and tape drive even with the RAID controller).

I'm still stuck back at square one until I can get around teh Symbios driver lockup :(
