XP on network
« on: October 02, 2003, 03:55:43 AM »
I have a mix of a win2k and xp on my network under the same workgroup. All machines connect to the internet by dhcp and can browse the internet. The wink2 machine can see the server and XP box  in windows explorer but only browse files on the server. It gets a network path not found trying to browse files on the XP box.

The XP box can not see the server or the win2k box, it gets a permissions error browsing the workgroup. I have XP box firewall turned off.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks in advance
Robert

I assume you have searched on here already before asking this and have made the necessary changes to the XP registry to allow it to be part of the e-smith network?

Yes I did change the XP registry with the patch and I checked it with regedit. Still no joy.

In the original post you say "error browsing the workgroup" are you using workgroups or have you joined the XP box to the SME domain?

I joined the XP box to the SME domain. I can see the XP  box  under the workgroup from the win2k  box, but can not browse it. I get an error network path not found.

Wonder what I'm doing wrong?

Any chance you have a bad share name on the XP box - perhaps spaces or something which W2K does not support

Rob - investigate permissions on the XP machine. If you can see it on the n/w this probably wont help but you might like to add the SME address to the XPs Winserver box under TCPIP advanced properties. Also try enabling netbios over tcpip on the XP.
Good luck

Finally got the XP box to see the SME server. Turns out that the virus program had a firewall built into it. I turned this off and now I can see SME but not the win2k boxes. The win2k boxes can see and browse the  XP box.

Thanks for all your help.
