Topic: do i need a dns for home network?

Ok guys  I am trying to set up a home network.

what i want to be able to do with it is.
host a few public websites and manage the email for these names.

alow my friends ftp and email access.

a little info.
I am using dsl.
as of right now i am using a linksys router to connect me to the internet.
right now i have 3 windows computers set up in a p2p network

I want to use  ddns servise like no-ip to do this with
I want to test thins out using the basic no-ip serve to test this.
then buy names after i know this will work



my plans are to use a sme server in standalone mode behind my router.

I am planning in the near future to set up a linux gateway for my home network.

my biggest question is with apache and dns.
do i need to set up a dns for my local machines?

and with apache do i need the host name of the computer to be the same as one of the sites that i will be hosting.

can anyone point me in the right direction?

with no-ip would work fine or dns2go once you have a no-ip and set it up as a damon then you would just type http://mywebpage.no-ip.com you dont have to worry about dns and ip,s that is what no-ip is for

Check your LinkSys router if it supports any ddns services. Many of them support dyndns.org (free).
Its much easier to have router update ip then it changes, instead of having server behind the router detect routers public ip in the scheduled interval and update dyndns service.
