Strange problem. I recently upgraded from 3.1 to 4.0. no problems. Although my I had to use my backup data files because they were not saved during the upgrade. However, that is not the subject of this email.

I have a e-smith server in dedicated server only mode. The primary domain name is "jmshome". The workgroup name is "office" I have two workstations one running Windows 2000 Pro and another running Windows 98 2nd Edition. The W2K pro WS works as it should. However, I can't log on to the e-smith server from the W98 WS. It doesn't see the PDC and gives a message to that effect. I can map the "primary" folder but receive a "shared files not accessable" "Access is denied" message. However, I can access and write to the folder assigned to the user. I have checked my tcp/ip settings and everything looks right but it doesn't work. Any ideas TIA :-)

Yes.....but I am not absolutely sure any of this will be your fix. I am finding alot of
strange stuff with win98se and samba. The solutions to a couple of issues
have NOT been where I would expect to find them. Anyways the answer is
yes, check out the Network Browser threads on the advanced forum.

I can log on to the W98 2E as administrator and access all the files in the primary folder. However, when I log on as an ordinary user I am not able to access folders below the primary files folder. I have examined W98 2E and have not found anything that resembles a "master browser" Any ideas?

I guess I am confused...is this the primary folder on your c: drive or something on the
e-smith server?

Access permissions on the e-smith server SHOULD be adaptable thru group and owner
permissions.

Most of the browsing talk on the Network Browsing thread(s) is related to seeing the
e-smith server and the "folders" (actually the directories in linux-speak) that are
located on the server from the "Network Neighborhood" interface on the Windows
client's desktop. If the browsing is working correctly (and you can see the server
here), then you can "map" these folders to drives and have them show up
in Window's "My Computer".

Hope this helps.
