Client to Proxy Authentication

Client to Proxy Authentication
« on: October 06, 2003, 04:43:11 PM »
I have installed a number of e-smith servers and made minor config changes to tune to particular installations but have now reached my border of knowledge and I am having problems to what may be a very simple request.

I wish to be able to give authenticated ad-hoc internet access trough the proxy on the e-smith (5.6 or 6) server. by simply adding some kind of check box beside users profiles in the server manger.

Resulting in, if users profile does not have box checked, user is denied internet access.
If user has box checked then when client tries to access internet they are prompted for their e-smith account username and password.

Hope that someone can help or at least point me in the right direction?

Hi,

there is a contrib "sme-squid" at http://www.e-smith.dyndns.org/ that do what your want.

Download
http://www.e-smith.dyndns.org/filessme/rpms/sme-upgppp-1.0-1.noarch.rpm
and
http://www.e-smith.dyndns.org/filessme/rpms/sme-squid-1.0-2.i386.rpm

The source is also there.

Works great for me.

Best

only blocks (or grants) web access. All other client apps like e-mail, ftp, irc, etç....can access internet without authentication.

Peter,

Thanks for the prompt information.

On your advice, I have downloaded and installed the rpms as indicated on SME V6 beta 2.

Most seems to be OK and it is configured in a very exceptable way.

The only thing that I seem to have a problem with is,
If a user who has been granted access to the internet, opens their browser and enters desired URL in address bar and presses enter, the logon promt screen appears and relevant user info is entered and OK is clicked. You would expect that the desired URL would open immediately but the Network detection error window appears, however if the browser refresh button is then clicked the desired URL appears correctly.

Small bug, but wondered if you have experienced the same issue? or had any ideas?

Thanks again
