Upgrade 5.1.2 > 5.6

Tomorrow morning i am going to upgrade a server from V 5.1.2 to 5.6. I will take a backup to tape from the server manager panel.
I prefer to make a fresh install and then load from tape
Can i expect to be able to restore from tape after the install, and have all users i-bays and so on, up running without any trouble. Or should i go for an upgrade?

My preferred approach is to Ghost the HDD (bit for bit copy) to a new drive and then upgrade over the top on the new drive.  If all else fails you can revert to the old HDD and be back up and running in minutes.

Be sure to disconnect the old drive IDE cable BEFORE upgrading.

If you use one of the newer 8MB cache drives you will also realise a moderate performance bonus.

I had problems with IMP webmail and LDAP not working due to doing a restore on SME 5.6 from a 5.5 backup file.  If moving to a new server, you should install 5.1.2 first, restore from 5.1.2 backup, then upgrade to 5.6.

Hope that helps,

It was the same server, so i did the upgrade option. Only had issues with PHP because of earlier PHPupgrade on 5.1.2. Solved that by upgrading PHP to 4.3.3. I have not seen any other problems so far.

I had a customer still using 4.1.2, before the upgrade i made him take 1 weeks work of backups, then did the upgrade.

4.1.2 > 5.1.2 > 5.6  I also did the update patches at each stage.

(Dont know if i really needed to but thought best to be uptodate before moving on.)

customer now on 5.6 (U5) everything working a treat. There are many differnt ways to do this, but if you have ghost as already been suggested then recovery would be immediate just swap the H/D's around..

kindest regards
