Topic: All works well, except..

Hey!

I'm a new user to the router SME.. I've got a question about it as follows:

I set up the router, and it all worked just fine, I could surf, ICQ, email, connect to IRC, FTP etc etc.
But when I did a "reboot" later that night, it all worked fine, except the surfing part.. Something's obviously wrong.. What might be the problem?

I now can FTP, IRC, ICQ, Email.. You name it I can do it, except surfing. I cannot use i.e. Explorer in WIndows to surf to any webpage..

It can resolve names like whatever.shacknet.nu etc, do the DNS must be allright, am I correct? But why is it that everything works except to surf the web?

maybe your squid (proxy-server) is not starting at boot-time.
try to start it by hand.

have a search in the forum for the command to do that...

you can start squid manually using:

/etc/init.d/squid start

Thanks for the tip, but it still doesn't work.
I did a service squid stop, then service squid start and it didn't work. All works well, except for surfing =/
Any other suggestions?

What do you mean by "surfing doesn't work" ? What error messages and such are you getting when you try to access an outside web page ?

I do not get any errors, it just doesn't display anything.
It begins to load the page, and the (I'm using Microsoft Internet Explorer) explorericon just spins all the time. Just doesn't happen anything else after that. No other webbrowser work either.
It's something with the router, because when I disconnects it and connects the old one, it works. (The old one is some small thingie leftover by the old ISP)

All other things works,.. IRC, ICQ, FTP, SSH etc etc.. And I can HTTP surf locally to the Servermanager.. But I cannot surf the web outside the local net.

What is your sme configuration?

The server setting should be either server only
or server-gatway public. If you set it to server-gateway private
you won't be able to surf the net. So be sure you have
this set up correctly.

If you have two nics(I assume you do) for the
server-gateway setting, make sure the external
nic has the IP address assigned to you by
your isp. Though this does not sound like the problem.

Thanks for the tip. I'll look at what config I've got.
I know it's Server-Gateway, but I don't know if it's private or public.. How can one change if it's private or public?

Log in as admin and run the configuration program.
When you come to the server, server-gateway
prompt, be sure to select server-gateway and
not server-gateway private. Then continue
with the rest of the configuration as usual.

I did that already. It's as "Dedicated Server and Gateway".

What version is it? 5.6 or 6.0?
In either case, you should try applying any
and all updates to see if this will fix
the problem. My server connects without
a hitch. I have my server's public nic connected
directly to the modem and the local nic
connected to the router.

I turned the routers DHCP server off and have the
DHCP server on the sme taking care of that.
My workstation is a win98 box and I have it
set up to recieve ip automatically,
then under
wins I have use dhcp for wins resolution checked.
Under gateway nothing then under
DNS configuration I have disable dns.

Another possibility is that you have to name
the isp's proxy server. If you did name it, then
take out the proxy server designation and see
if that fixes it.

You didn't happen to try installing the public
dns contrib did you? That screwed my
internet access up and I had to get rid
of all the templates associated with it
in the custom-templates directory. Then
reboot the system and all was fine.

I've not had to mess with squid. However,
I believe that the update installs a new
version for 5.6.

Sorry I can't help you much more than this.
