Can't find 5.5 updates
« on: October 18, 2003, 05:29:56 PM »
I've searched here and at contribs.org.  I can't find all the 5.5 updates. Can someone point me in the right direction. I want to set up a new server and I need reliable VPN support and backup to workstation.

As a side note, has anyone tried backup to workstation with 6.03b?

Dont think their are any updates from Mitel, Seems they only supporting 5.6 and above.

You will have to do the updates yourself.

Try here
http://public.ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/e-smith/updates/obsolete/

The last (& final so it would seem) update for v5.5 was Update 6, but even if you apply that you will have security vulnerabilities as per the last 2 security alerts/updates from Mitel for 5.6 & 6.0b3.

Backup to workstation works OK in v5.6, if you are having troubles try using a different web browser ie Netscape. MSIE5.5 had serious trouble handling the large >1GB backup files. And of course backup to workstation will not restore files larger than 2Gb. You need to use something like Darell Mays backup2ws to split the archive and get around that limitation.

VPN works OK in v5.6 also if you apply the updates. The VPN problems (if you are experiencing any with v5.6) are probably to do with Client VPN settings (particularly Win XP) or Router issues.

Ray,

I've never been able to get VPN to work with 5.6. Tried all the updates and fixes listed here and at contribs.org. My theory is that VPN works okay with true pentium cpus and flaky with AMD (which is what I use). I've seen you post that you don't have trouble with VPN and 5.6. Do you use petium or AMD cpus?

I need to VPN out of this server to another SME5.5 server and VPN into this server daily.

I have always used Pentium based servers, although am just testing on a AMD based server now (nothing to report as yet).

Have you noted the significance of this post (and thread).

PPTP requires
IP Protocol 6 (TCP) port 1723 and
IP Protocol 47 (GRE)
Check your router for the ability to Portfwd GRE packets

I also previously posted that Win2K VPN settings which worked OK with v5.5 DID NOT work when I initially upgraded to v5.6 & applied the Update4. I had to enable "Require data encryption" in the VPN setup.

Keep trying

I did a complete turn around. Installed 6.0B3 and updates (which removes any notice of it being a beta). First impression is I'm pleased. I guess I can live without the add-ins until they are moved to 6.0.
