Hi John...you may want to update to  1.4pl2 as it addresses some issues, but not what you are having issues with :-)

As far as black boxes, verify your Directories for Albums on  the config screen are correct. I had similar problem, and in my case, the default entries where pointing to the wrong directory. If you followed the howto you should have something like:

http://www.familybrown.org/howtos/gallery-howto.html

Filesystem path to thumbnails for movies: /opt/gallery/images/movie.thumb.jpg
Album directory: /opt/gallery/albums
Albums URL: http://yourhost.yourdomain/gallery/albums

Also, when you follow the how-to from Dan Brown, pay attention to the setting for permissions and the ownership of the albums.

I have installed 1.3.4 to 3 separate ibays and it has been working great for me.  A very good how-to can be found at http://sme.swerts-knudsen.dk/howtos/howto_13.htm

I did see a similar problem as yours elsewhere in this forum.  Seems Gallery gets "confused" sometimes.  Solution was to go back into setup and enter a path that is wrong for your pictures.  Secure Gallery and go to the web page that you now know won't work for certain, then go back into Gallery setup and put in the correct path.
