Feature comparison v4 > v5 > v6 beta
« on: October 25, 2003, 06:24:38 PM »
Hi,

People start to convince me that I should upgrade my 4.1.2 system ;-)

I have searched quite a bit to no avail, but does it exist any feature comparison matrix for the last versions?  I'm especially interested in enhancements in v5's webmail compared to imp in v4, also which (other) new features have been introduced since 4.1.2

Thanks for infos and urls

best regards

You could look at the change logs between versions to decide if there is a benefit for you. If you wish to get advice or recommendations you should at least include some information about your configuration. Depending on the enviroment  in which it is used will have some impact on what you would want. A version 4 server running in server only mode is a lot different to one running in server and gateway mode, serving web pages, dynamic content, email, firewall, dmz, etc

I'm running 4.1.2 in dedicated server/gateway mode.

I'm particualry interested in the differences in v5's webmail user interface and abilities (imp delivered with 4.1.2 didn't always handle message attachments very well etc.)  Are v5 still using imp?

Sure, I'm just trying to figure out if it's worth the hassle to upgrade.    Btw, does it exist a description of v5 or v6 manager pages so I can peek a bit around to see what's new?

Well, IMP has been upgraded to 3.2 for SME 6.0beta (and, presumably, the final one when it comes out), which does lots of things much better than the 2.2 that shipped with 4.1.2.  The server manager on 5.x is pretty much the same as on 4.x, with a few branding changes.  6.0, however, makes some changes to that which I think are definite improvements.

Thanks for this info.

Btw, does v6 require significantly more powerful computers to maintain the same gateway and server processing speed as v 4.1.2?  Example, I now run 4.1.2 with a 1 gig AMD w/512M ram.  Will v6 slow to a crawl on this machine?

I have 6.0 with Service Link running on a PII 350 with 128 Meg of ram, works fine as a gateway, don't notice any speed differences from when it ran 5.5.  It's a little slower when making changes via the server manager, but I make so few it's not a concern.

If you upgrade to 6 you should notice that it is faster. Server Manager access is improved and now displays faster and caching is much improved on the new version

OK, there seems to be no showstoppers here.

What about copying all current users and their user folders from v 4.1.2 to v6.  If I have the v4 disk as the 2nd disk, any import facilities in v6, or do I need to manually recreate all users with pwds etc. and also manually copy user folders?

The only support for changing from one version to another is to do a system upgrade, or a backup/restore.

We've recently found a problem with upgrade from pre-5.5 systems, so it would be safest for you to update first to 5.6, then 6.0.

You mean the backup / restore from the e-smith manager?

OK, thanks for the hands up.  Any clue when v6 beta will quit beta stage and the final release will emerge?

Yes.

No.

However, I think you'll find 6.0b3 + updates to be perfectly stable, and any and all testing done by this community will benefit this community in the form of additional updates.
