SME 6.03b & DYNDNS...???
« on: October 26, 2003, 09:33:45 AM »
Looking for documents on HOW TO setup a new SME 6.03b server on a DYNDNS.org account. I have blocked ports 80  & 25 (COX communications) and would like to provide email, VPN, web page, and ftp connections using server/gateway mode?? Or would it be easier to be behind a Linksys cbl/DSL router with NAT and Firewall/port forwarding capabilities?

I have exactly the same problem (Cox). I want to host a web server but port 80 is blocked. I have searched this forum at length and it appears to me there are a bunch of smart aleck responses but no step-by-step help on how to actually do anything. Very frustrating when all you’re trying to do is learn. If you do find out I would appreciate it if you would let me know too.

To host web/mail on a blocked connection requires using another port number for both web and mail. The only way I know of is to use the redirection service of the dyn dns server. This requires that you do a custom setup of SME including some manual edits of config files to change the ports the service runs on. Not an easy task and one that will leave you pretty much on your own for support.

Another option would be to run another computer as a gateway/firewall and do port translation when you forward the traffic. (ie external port 2500 -> 25 on SME) I would recommend IPcop as a good firewall at the right price.

By the time you pay for your dynamic account, and the redirection service you might as well just pay for commercial hosting and be done with it.
