Backup to Desktop does not work
« on: October 30, 2003, 01:14:31 PM »
I'm using 5.6 unsupported. When I try to select "Backup to Desktop" and then click "Perform" a blank window will appear and nothing happens. The system does not even ask for a file name for the backup. I tried the same with SME 6b3 and the same also nothing happens. Is there a step that I am not doing in order for the backup process to start. Please help.

Best regards,
Samer

Please report all bugs to smebugs@mitel.com, as always.

I am having the same problem here - when I attempt to perform a backup to workstation, I get a blank page and nothing else.

I'm currently using SME6.0b2 and attempting to backup to an XP home edition machine.  The SME server itself is running a RAID5 array, but I like to make a backup of the server prior to installing any updates or contribs.

Simply reporting this as a bug will not assist either Samer or myself, as for me, this is my primary means of backing up my server.  The two of us have this problem, does anybody else - and, more importantly, - has anybody found a fix for this??

This is just a thought. Since this compresses the file and then downloads via FTP to the desktop, check your remote settings on the server. Try to turn on and save and then turn off and save. Reboot maybe after each change???

This is just a guess, but there may be some ports being blocked somewhere that is not allowing any the traffic to flow...

I have the FTP settings enabled on my server, as this is the primary means of my clients accessing their websites, so I am certain that the server does not have these ports blocked.

However, it might somehow be possible that the XP machine as I tried to backup my other server (SME 5.6 at work,) using the same procedure and got the same result - a blank screen.

Samer, what OS are you trying to back up to?

I have been using MondoArchive with good success. Do a search of these archives for the link to the files.

I'm using XP Professional. However, I got to solve the problem by logging in as a different user. When the problem occurred, I was logged in as "Administrator". Logging in as a normal user (with Administrator privileges) has solved the problem for me for both the SME 5.6 and SME 6b3.

Therefore, I believe there should be something wrong with the settings of the XP user that does not allow completing the backup process.

Samer,

Thanks for the information.  I will try this as well and report my findings.

Samer,

Have not had any success with this.  I created a new user account on my XP machine and tried to backup to that, but it did not work.  I do not have any trouble backing up to my Win95 machine aside from the fact that the drive is only 600MB and cannot store the full backup (partials worked for test purposes.)

I even tried to ensure that the folder I was attempting to backup to was not write protected, marked as read-only or anything else like that.

Can you provide details as to how you got your XP machine to work?  I'm running XP Home edition.

As I reported earlier, I did this by simply changing the user. I have also tried this from a different machine (running Windows 2000 Server) and it worked with me. I'm not really sure how and why this has been fixed.

Samer,

I was able to get the backup to work using the following technique.  I'm not sure if it's neccessary to log in under a different account to make this work, but I'll post my steps here lest anyone else need this solution:

1. Open Windows Explorer.
2. Right click on the folder you wish to back up your SME box to.
3. Select "Sharing and Security" from the menu.
4. Under the "Sharing" tab, check "Allow network users to change my files"
5. Click "Apply," then "OK."

Now the backup will work.  I suppose this option, when unchecked, is XP's way of write protecting the shared folder.
