Topic: OT: To open the port or not...

Having read through the postings about opening a port on SME, I have decided to leave SME as it is and build another server to host an application that needs to have a non-standard port open for TCP.

There are so many Linux distributions. I am interested in one that has a high quality admin panel for opening and closing ports. Also, while I don't need a robust GUI for OS, I do have another application that does need frame buffer, virtual or otherwise.  

So far, RedHat, Mandrake and Suse have been suggested. RedHat seems to be getting quite large. I have yet to review the others.

Does anyone have an opinion they care to share?

How about SuSe ? I think they have done a real good job...

Out of curiosity, what ports were you wondering about opening?
Often times there are ways to safely do this on your existing box.

Which port isn't terribly important. I have control of both sides of the chasm and so can choose to avoid well known ports.

The key thing is that I like the way SME works and I am not familiar with the template system. I am new to Linux, which poses some challenges. FWIW, I am reading like mad and splitting my knuckles where I can. Still I hesitate to break something that works, soooo....

I am considering an alternative. No question that opening a port on the SME server and starting the thread is the shortest route at the moment.

What do you suggest?

If you control both sides there is no downside to opening the ports.

Any idea if the one for SME5.6 will work with SME6.0?
