SME server cannot connect to Internet
« on: November 08, 2003, 01:06:02 PM »
Hi,

If all the clients can access the internet through the SME server, but the SME server cannot access the internet by itself, what could be the problem and how to solve it.

Thanks,
David

The clients are running Windows XP. All of them have static IPs, DNS is the SME server, gateway is the SME server as well.

I don't think this is a dns problem because I cannot connect to external IP addresses as well. It could be something in the configuration of the firewall. Any suggestions please.

Mr. Thomas, I'm interpreting your first and latest posts as contradictory.  Can your workstations connect to the Internet via SME or can't they?  I don't pretend to know all the ins and outs of SME but it doesn't seem reasonable to me that a test of Internet access via the admin console would fail yet workstations could get through.  What does an ifconfig at a command prompt show you?

We need to know the setup of the server (gateway, private gateway, server only), and what type of internal and external ip settings you have (static, dynamic). Also go through the steps you took when you did the "Configure you server", specifically starting from the type of server (gateway, server only) all the way to the end.

If you have two nics, try the obvious, switch the cables, check for IP address conflicts, make sure you have no proxy server settings (unless your ISP requires it), check the firewall ip address, you may not need one...

These are just suggestions, my rule is try everything three times, then start from scratch! I would appreciate any other comments from the group!

The workstations can connect to the internet via the SME server. When testing the internet connection from the admin console it will give a positive result. Now this is not the problem. The problem is when I try to access the internet from the server itself, for example when I use "lynx" or "wget http://www------", this is where I face the problem and cannot get access to the outside world.

I'm running SME 5.6. It is configured as a server and gateway dedicated. Both the external and internal IPs are static. Two NICs. I have to provide an external proxy server because this is a requirement from my ISP.

I hope this clarifies the situation. Any suggestions on how to solve this issue?

I have the same problem.  All the workstations can access the Internet but the Server cannot :-/
