Final Release of 6.0 soon??
« on: November 10, 2003, 02:49:43 AM »
Does anyone have any scoop on when to expect the final release version of SME 6.0??

I believe this has been in beta since Aug 2003 (maybe before that) and the Redhat updates are happening more frequently than this final release! LOL

The semi-offical word via Developer List is :
The commercial MAS 6000 / v6 was released about 3 months ago.
The Unsupported Developers release will stay as Beta, as this is the development version and will be subject to change.

Mitel as a rule does not give timeframes out in public.

Regards

N.B. I don't work for Mitel so this is only my interpretation.

I'm waiting on Stabil release of SME 6.0 too.
Running 6.0 Beta 3 now and it runs much as the stabil 5.6 version.

That's a new one to me, where did you get that info.
This is not the way Mitel has done it in the past.
If you go to: http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/e-smith/current/iso/
You can see that the last stabil version is 5.6.
They should at least bring out a stabil version, right?

I read a reply somewhere (Don't know anymore where I read it) on the same question ones that they needed more reply's from Beta-testers before they could bring out the stabil release.
If that is so than I would like to ask Mitel what topic they need more testing on.
I'd be happy to help testing it as I have a fully functional SME 6.0 Beta 3 running and if it helps to bring out Stabil version 6 I'd be happy to help.

Mitel is under no obligation to inform those of us who want to use the "unsupported developer version" of their plans.  You want 6.0 final and support?  Buy MAS 9000!  I know it's difficult to find a reseller, but that's the way Mitel has chosen to play this game.  It's their playing field and their rules, so we play their way or we don't play at all.

I have stronger words for what Mitel is doing!

They don't have the decency to release the final version to the very community who helps to develop/debug SME .. this would never have happened with E-smith (before Mitel bought them)

They are holding out on us!

If they want more people to buy it - get real and charge a reasonable price!

If SME was a reasonable price I would even buy it as would many others. I don't like their strategy - force us to have a beta or pay too much for something most of us can build anyway.

This seems to be common with "for-profit" Linux companies - they have a free somewhat crippled version and an expensive featured version. Hey what happened to win -win where we both get to make some money.!

They are just going to drive people away to other distros - I have been using E-smith for years and would happily part with a couple of hundred dollars -  (much more than that and you might as well build your own or buy other commercial s'ware) I am now looking for alternatives.

The stupidity quotient on this list is just getting higher and higher. The latest 6.0B3 patches permit the server manager to display Vers 6.0 and say nothing about beta.

Even so,  no matter what the label, it's a great product, and one I suspect no one here could write, and very few really understand.  To get it for free is a remarkable and unqualified good deal. Why complain?

If your unwarranted grousing about Mitel causes them to make the server unavailable as a free download, then we'll all have someone to complain about:  and it will be you!

Remember "GPL" ?

Mitel in the past made relaese available without such delays - up until 5.6. Their behaviour that has changed this time! Why!

The label is important because in a production enviroment you don't want a beta!

There is no dispute that it is a good product but there is something to be said for a finished/release product - confidence.!

Keep your personal afronts to yourself.

So, as Tom said, download and install 6b3, then install the updates.  Look closely and observe that it doesn't say "beta" anywhere after this.

As to the GPL, sounds like you're suggesting that Mitel is violating it.  How exactly are they doing so?  Yeah, I'd like to see a release of 6.0 final as well (with an ISO clearly marked as such), but I think we have 6.0 final for all intents and purposes.

Well if it is a final why don't they say so?

Hi

Could It be that Mitel are afaid of SCO? - they might stand better with a 'beta' release until
it's clear if SCO has a case.

Hmmm...

Why would Mitel be afraid of a bunch of losers who smokes crack for an operation?

Okay, probably they want to indemnify themselves against any possibilities.  With SCO's brouhaha, I learnt a new word though - indemnify

Thanks to Dan Brown, I'm going ahead installing 6b3 with updates on my production machine..  I can't wait any longer for an official 6.  Here I am crossing my fingers and hoping when 6 do got around, I can install and upgrade without any hitches..

Best regards to all who have contributed to this superb product
