Topic: PPTP VPN

I plan to upgrade my office SME5.6u2 Server/gateway PC to a more powerful one and install a couple of apps (Firebird database & a source control system) that listen on a couple of ports.

Whilst at home, I'd like to connect to my SME server (in my office) and access those applications on SME5.6.  I assume I do this via a VPN and that SME5.6 can handle VPN's (is this PPTP?), but, once I've connected, would SME treat the VPN connected user like a local network user and give them access to the apps(ports) on the SME server?

In a word, yes it should. There are certain vagaries.

VPN connections themselves are another. PPTP is one protocol used for VPN, and is the one that your server uses. I understand that IPSEC is meant to be better, and there are contribs/rpms on runningit on your server - have a search in the forums.
