problems with installation.. pls help
« on: August 30, 2000, 02:18:11 AM »
I am having trouble install e-smith. I type in proceed, then it says welcome to e-smith server.

Then it says probing for mouse type...
traceback (innermost last):
File "/usr/bin/anaconda", line 133, in ?
result = xserver.startX ()
File "/usr/lib/python1.5/site-packages/xserver.py", line 144, in startX
x.probe ()

etc....

and it stops installing.

I have a Microsoft Serial mouse with a S3 Virge DX video card.
The computer is 166 w/ 32meg of ram.

Can someone please help me.

Those messages indicate that you have a problem with reading your installation media, either the CDROM drive or the floppy drive. The installer shouldn't be trying to start X or bothering to probe for a mouse.

There might be some additional information on the screens you get with Alt-F3 and Alt-F4.

No something is very amiss there. Did you download the iso image? If so what does the output of

md5sum .iso

give? When your trying to install and it gets to the screen where you "accept" try hitting F4 and watch the steps it goes through and let me know which ones succeed and which ones fail.

When I did alt F4 everything seems to be right.
It says
eth0: RealTel RTL8139 Fast Ethernet at blahblah
eth1: RealTel RTL8139 Fast Ethernet at blahblah
raid0 personality registered
raid1 personality registered
raid5 personality registered
then it stops

i do alt F1 again and it had the previous error as before...

i downloaded the e-smith iso from http://mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/e-smith/e-smith-4.0/e-smith-4.0-cdrom.iso
is this the right iso? or do i need another cd or something?

thanks

I am having the exact same problem/error message, and I am using the same ISO image.

Could this be a fault ISO image?

No it means theyre running autoboot.bat or whatever the file is called in the dosutils dir that should be wipped off the iso file thats available to download. Dont use this method to install e-smith, its bogus as you see above. _Read_ the manual, theyre good. Hey, how much effort to start a broswer and then ask a question on the forum. Much easier to read the manual for 5 minutes and save yourself the time.

Use the bootable cdrom, or create a boot floppy. One or the other. Dont use autoboot.bat to try and install e-smith, it doesnt work.
