Topic: Problems with E-smith 4.0 Final ??

Hi there,

We have been using E-smith 4.0 on a quite few machine, lans etc.We think that E-smith is a great product & we intend to use it more and more in the future but we need to resolve most of these problems.

Here are some of the problems we have:

Dial-up connection - modem doesn't dial up all the time, seems to hang alot. Reboot seems to sort it out for a while. (We are using US Robotics/3Com modem ext 56k modems on most PC). This is probably our biggest gripe - we seems to have it on all our installations of E-Smith. Are there any special dial-up strings we can try?? Also we never seem to have this problem on the E-smith Beta. Do you think we should go back to using the Beta???

WAN access - I have already posted a report for this & I have been contacted by the E-Smith support. Just to let you all know that we still cannot access our E-smith box across the WAN!

A new problem we are having is with a ISDN TA - model ASUSCOM TA200-ST - We have tried changing the dial-up string but it still doesn't connect. Has anyboday had any experience with this TA??

Also a quick problem - we think its a hardware fault - but on a new installation evertime we shutdown we get a error message something like this:

general protection fault: f000
CPU: 0
EIP: 05.....
....
Stack: ....

We think it is a memory problem?? Just want to get some feedback for that?

Please raise this on the developer mailing list. Report exactly what the /var/log/messages file is telling you about what is going on with the modem. You are the first person to report a problem of this nature - if you'd like e-smith to help fix the problem then you'll need to help us - we haven't seen the problem.

Only if you will be happy with that beta forevermore. If you want to take advantages of any improvements with later releases, then we'll need to fix any problems.

I'm not aware of any changes between the beta and final which affect modem dialup. If you tell me exactly which beta, then I can double check.

If you are a supported customer, then we will fix this as a top priority.

As you know, we don't currently support ISDN devices.

Hi there,

Update:

1) I downloaded the E-smith base rpm updates & installed - modem dial-up seems to have improved. We also found out that ISP has had pop dial up problems.

2) WAN - well we are still considering signing up as a support customer - I still hope that there is progress on that??

3)We resolved the ISDN problem: ASUSCOM TA200-ST - go to the /etc/e-smith/templates/etc/sysconfig/network-script/chat-ppp0

Edit the file 30dialup to something like this:

change ATl0... to just ATB4, also remove tone dial up - }DT{ - remove the T

Sadly, there's not a lot we can do about that from our end

There is a bug lodged and it is on the development schedule. I'm sorry,
but we can't make any promises for the timeframe to fix bugs unless
people have a support contract.

Excellent. It looks like time to write a full e-smith ISDN FAQ. The joy
of ISDN is that it is a single standard - with sooooo many regional
variations.

FWIW, I had terrible problems getting the 4.0 betas to dial out. Talked to Paul extensively about this, though we never reached a conclusion. When I installed the 4.0 final, the dialing problems disappeared. Just a little FM, I suppose
