Configuring DynDns with ADSL Router

It should not be difficult to ask ddclient or some other tool to regularly log onto the router admin page and query the external IP address. Search the Internet - they may be scripts that will do that for you. Not everyone is using e-smith, but there must be plenty of people on dynamic IP ADSL and running some kind of Linux server *and* managing to keep dynamic domains updated.

Whether using the e-smith as the router is the best method of setting up a network or not, makes no odds. Sometimes people use routers and that's what the server needs to support.

Reasons for using a separate router could be:

- that's all you have or is what the ISP insists you use
- other PCs or servers need access to more ports that e-smith will allow (ever tried using MS NetMeeting through an e-smith server?)
- you would like a fall-back mechanism for accessing the Internet when your server is not operating

So - the solution is out there, and is likely to be non-e-smith related as it is not solely and e-smith server problem.

Absolutely - it's horses for courses - there's no one "right" solution.

I've run it both with external router and with SME as the router, with and without dynamic DNS. For my own purposes I find SME as the router a preferable solution, though it might not suit everyone (and I've seriously considered the redundancy question - I hope I don't live to regret it :).

My point is merely that IF you use SME as the gateway, it has all the hooks you need. If not, then of course you need to set up something else.

That's the great thing about open-source in general, there is ALWAYS a solution if you look for it!

Yes please - that would be very helpful. Our main dsl provider here in NZ is PPPoA - we have FreeSwan wans running between SME's with cable ISP's but FreeSwan is a mission (if not impossible) thru a router as a gateway.

FWIW - We have been installing 6.0 as production since beta 3 with no probs. some contribs need a tweak - mostly at the interface level.

I use the ip-up to trigger the ddclient update also .
