Webhosting different domains?

Webhosting different domains?
« on: December 11, 2003, 08:12:48 PM »
Alright, I've set everything up through this write up
http://www.aplawrence.com/SME/virtualdomain.html

Now I am wondering what i need to do as far as DNS? The other domains i want to host on this box can either have URL forwarding or changing the Nameserver. Can the SME server be a nameserver for domains host on it? (ns1.SMEBox.com) Does it do this normally or is there a contrib for it?

I've searched the other posts but i am trying to fully put all the other different questions and answers together.

So the main question is at the end of this article http://www.aplawrence.com/SME/virtualdomain.html

it say to change the DNS, how and where do i do this, like i said in my domain web-console i can either forward it to a url or change the name server.......

No you wouldn't, if you've known how much problem it can be if done unprofessionally.

Have a experienced and dedicated service company do it for you for free or for a small fee.

Your e-smith server can host numerous virtual domains together with your primary domain:

1) You can register/purchase a new domain name with any of the registrars (I use NameScout at  http://www.namescout.com ).
Then you will need to delegate nameservers for your new domain name (free at ZoneEdit   http://www.zoneedit.com ).

OR

2) You can obtain 5 free secondary domain names from dynDNS at  http://www.dyndns.org  .

Then, you use your e-smith manager panel to:  1) add an i-bay for your new virtual domain, and  2) add the virtual domain - here you simply add your newly purchased or freely obtained domain name.

Even though your primary domain name and virtual domain names all have the same IP address, your e-smith server sorts everything out  automagically.

Had similar problem free DNS is ok with only a few domains but when you go beyond that you need to be in control. We have set up Primary and Secondary DNS on 2 RH9 boxes and the GUI in RH9 makes setting up DNS a breeze and propagation delay is only held up by the big boys. You can readily check your setup from www.dnsreport.com afterwards. Use a domain registrar whose domain manager lets you change DNS to point to your servers readily. Apart from being in control you can now offer DNS as a service on top of your other activities.
