Topic: mv passwd + shadow file ?

Hi all,

I'm running a poweredge server with RH 7.3 that serves IMAP/POP3/SMTP/HTTP/squirrelmail.

The problem is that I want to migrate to 6.0 but I don't have my mail-users password. So instead of changing 100+ passwords on the clients I rather would like to keep those passwords.

So I wonder if I would copy the /etc/passwd /etc/shadow and /etc/group files from my RH7.3 box to my SME 6.0 box, and create those users again, if that would work or is this a really stupid idea ?

At the moment I'm running the password cracker 'john' for 16 days now and still no guesses, so I think the admin before me made really strong passwords... unfortuanetly he  forgot to write 'm down

So all suggestions on how to recover those passwords would be greatly appreciated !

what i would do:
- backup your old data
- upgrade to SME 6.0
- check if the users are still there
- if not restore your data to the new server
- check if now the users are there
