Cant install SME 6.0 - need some help
« on: January 16, 2004, 01:47:58 PM »
I have a SME 6.0 beta 3 installed.
Now I want to upgrade to the SME 6.0 Final.

The computer boots up on the CD
I choose lang and keyboard
The install then claims that the CD is NOT in the drive, and I can choose a harddrive, and install from there..
What is wrong? The CD IS in the drive..
The cd is ok - run md5sum on the file and everything was OK..
When I puck ALT+F3 or is it ALT+F4 ?? Anyway.. I can see the server tries to mount the CDROM as hdc.. but nothing happens..

I need some help on this..

Best Regards

Assuming that you have all else correct, iso burnt in the correct format etc I would guess that you have a hardware problem. Do you have another cdrom drive that you can try? The fact that it starts the install suggests that the disc is ok, but it is not going through which may mean a read error of sorts. I have experienced the same symptoms before and the drive was at fault. Faulty ram can also cause similar issues.

Hardware problems?

hmm, maybe, but i dont get it.. It is only with SME 6.0 CD there is a problem.

Anyway - I reinstalled SME 5.6.. It works! But I still want to install 6.0.

try this:

after you re-install 5.6 and do all the updates, the sym-link between /dev/hdX and /dev/cdrom gets broken.  Use the command:

ln -fs /dev/hdx /dev/cdrom

x= the drive letter associated with the cdrom:
primary master=a
primary slave=b
secondary master=c
secondary slave=d

This recreates the sym-link and should fix the problem.

It often happend then IDE controller with CDROM is not supported (Promise, HP controller etc.) Try to use simple setup and use primary master for your HardDrive and Secondary master for your CDROM drive.

Sometimes it happend then your CDROM is not burned correctly from the verified good image file. Try to burn it again on slow speed (4X or 8X).

Use version 6.0 image that has size 342Mb, not the one that was put by mistake (270MB)
