Hi All,
I have done a search but couldn't find anything to help me so here I am posting and hoping that someone out there knows the answers. I have been using backup2workstation for a while now to back up a couple of important ibays to a removable HDD on a PC running Windows XP Home Edition. One of the ibays has permissions for a group only, but when the backup is complete the backup file is accessable to anyone, I have tried to change the permissions on the share but Windows doesn't give any option but to either enable or disable the altering of the files. reading is always on unless the share is on the local machine, not accessable on the network. Is there anyway I can password protect the backup job? Either from SME5.6 or is there any Windows programs that will let me password protect the share? Any help is appreciated.

How bizzare!  I use Win2K for this same job & in that you can limit reading by group.  Seems that M$ took this feature out in XP...

Hi Nick,
Only in the home edition, you can turn it on and off in XP Pro! Just another way to get people to spend their bucks on M$.

Assuming you are using winrar  you could set it to include a password
You would set it at the beginning of the edit source line as I do to add a recovery record in case of a bad sector on disk as in -rr1%% /home/rest of backupline here
I don't know if it helps or not but I do remember the good old days of floppies when 6were good but the seventh was bad and made the whole backup bad. Obviously you should try checking the restore data before relying on this.

   Set a password to encrypt files during archiving or to decrypt during extracting. The password is case-sensitive. If you omit the password in the command line, you will be prompted to enter it.

   In the shell mode a password may be entered through Enter default password dialog or in the Archive name and parameters dialog.

Example:
add the contents of the folder "games" to the archive "secret", using the password ZaBaToAd

WinRAR a -pZaBaToAd -r secret games\*.*

Notes
1) if you wish to achieve real security do not use a password shorter than 8 characters or one which is easy to guess;
2) do not forget your passwords or your data will be completely lost.
