adsl and dns update
« on: October 04, 2000, 08:59:46 AM »
Hi everyone,

I am new to e-smith and linux, but I use it at home for connection to the net via telstras adsl, I have added the pppoe add ons and done the updates for the ssh...

I have two problems, firstly, the yi.org dns update does not seem to do what it is sposed to... does it work properly, have I done something wrong or is it a prob that people know of...?

Secondly, I have installed the ssh and done all that is required to make the java remote access work, it works locally on my intranet but not via the web, i.e. at work.
as I said I am using adsl and a friend of mine is using optus cable, he has his external proxy settings installed in his e-smith settings and Telstra would not supply me with their proxy information "it transparent" and "we dont have the information to give you" were all I could drag out of the "helpdesk" guy when I rung. Is it actually a requirement to have this info to make it work, or is it that after several installs I have missed something simple, I have followed the install instuctions to the letter, the ibay has internet access (no password required) etc as per...

ANY help or information on one or either of these greatly appreciated...

Kind regards
Cameron Stacey

Dynamic DNS is only supported for direct ethernet connections. If you are adventurous, you may like to go to :

ftp://ftp.e-smith.org/pub/e-smith/contrib/charlieb/RPMS/noarch

and fetch e-smith-base-4.0.12-35.noarch.rpm. This is hot off the press, and should support dynamic DNS over PPP and PPPoE connections. This is very much beta software though, so you should observe all safety precautions.

Thank you so much for your speedy reply Charlie...:)

As a matter of fact I have done the rpm update there as you suggested, is that for the yi.org dns fix you were referring to Charlie...?

Charlie,

I have loaded the e-smith-rp-pppoe rpm and the rp-pppoe rpm's, I had setup for dialup mode as per the instuctions then I reconfigured to use dedicated... I then rebooted and its connected when when the init pppoe came up prior to the login prompt...:)

Then I configured logged in as admin to use the yi.org dns update but I cant tell if its working for sure other than I cannot hit my page, which indicates to me that it is not. Is there a way to check on this...?

What I do however is use a script which I downloaded called dns_update.sh and have to run it manually when I boot then login. I would actually like to make this an automatic update at boot time and change the attribs on the file to prevent an attacker from viewing the username and passwrd, I thought it needed to be chaged to chmod 700 and copied to the /usr/sbin dir, but when I put a line in my init.d file ".usr/sbin/dns_update.sh" it does not work at boot time, I dont know if its a rights issue or not...

I hope this is accurate enough and complete enough for you to be able to help with a sugestion or two...:)

Kind Regards,
Cameron Stacey

Jason,

Did you configure for dialup mode first, then install the packages, reboot, login as admin and reconfigure the dialup to dedicated mode...?

Probably :-)

Remember that you are upgrading the RPM, not installing it.  You need to do:

rpm -Uhv .....noarch.rpm

You can do this directly from the net:

rpm -Uhv ftp://ftp.e-smith.org/..../e-smith-base-4.0.12-35.noarch.rpm

I believe the mgetty+sendfax you want is here.  I don't know what the distinction between "-" and "+" is but it seemed to work ok.

ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/redhat/redhat-6.1/i386/RedHat/RPMS/mgetty-sendfax-1.1.21-2.i386.rpm

I found it on the e-smith web portal
