A client just asked if I could install "snooper" software on an e-smith server to monitor the email and internet activites of an employee who is evidently conducting his own business on the employers time and system. Does anyone have any sugestions or opinions?

Check out www.languard.com  It has a 60 day evaluation that might be enough to get the info you need.   It's for nt or win2000.  Something similar for E-Smith would be great maybe somebody else knows of something.

Dsniff would work well for this. I have been successfully running it on e-smith.

It allows you to monitor the user's email and  web use in real time.

Where did you get DSNIFF? What I have been only able to find has been source. Nothing like a RPM or anything else in that fashion.

There are a couple of rpm's available for the previous version. I have the one I use on a machine which is in a different location right now.

Send me your email address and I will forward it to you later today.

I have heard Ntop works very well on e-smith.

www.ntop.org

there are no RPMs so you need to compile it, but it is rather simple.

It sniffs all network traffic and has a nice history report as well as bandwith utilization and overall network use stats.  It's a free app thats been around a while.

You view the stats via any web browser and can add login restrictions so others cannot view the stats.

I have used it to monitor the Internet use of dual T1 bandwidth and it keeps up with the large amount of traffic and several hundred users.

I don't think it gives much info on the email history other than how much.
