Title: Adding internal sata raid for storage
Post by: guest1618 on July 01, 2010, 07:28:03 PM
I have a SME 7.4 with a single SATA 160G for boot and some storage but it is getting full and I'd like to add an internal 1T SATA raid10 using two 1T SATA drives. Again, this would be in addition to the boot disk. Are there any problems I should be aware of before I start? Is there a HowTo? Most of what I have found is for SATA boot drives or not relevant to extra internal storage. I have installed the drives and the system recognizes them as sdb and sdc and returns the correct drive specs but I have not formatted them yet. Any help or suggestions is appreciated.

Below is the output of smartctl -i /dev/sdb; smartctl -i /dev/sdc

it can be done easily, search the wiki for the howto

just be aware that a single hd for / is a bad choice: should it fail, you'll loose all your customization (and server won't boot)

be sure to have a good backup

I have been a member of this board for a long time and have submitted very few requests because the vast majority of questions I had have already been asked and answered. I always search first. Maybe I'm using incorrect search terms. Maybe I did not understand the howto's. I am not a Linux expert and as I said in my request, I did not find anything on my particular question, that's why I posted the topic.

Why did you even bother to reply? Your response was unhelpful and dismissive. This sort of response to a valid question, and most are, just serves to make people angry and/or intimidated, neither of which is warranted. If you can't be more helpful than this, please don't reply.

Always start here :

http://wiki.contribs.org/Main_Page (http://wiki.contribs.org/Main_Page)

Right hand side : Howtos  : http://wiki.contribs.org/Category:Howto (http://wiki.contribs.org/Category:Howto)

Pages in category "Howto"

and just below :

AddExtraHardDisk http://wiki.contribs.org/AddExtraHardDisk (http://wiki.contribs.org/AddExtraHardDisk)  as a starting point

Voila, Qui e, quick and easy

You're not going to achieve RAID10 with just 2 drives.
Stephano was spot on with his willing, timely, direct
and honest post ...somewhat unthanked.

I would add I'm on a beach writing with a palmtop, so searching the wiki is a bit difficult ;-)

Aaaargh... enjoy it. I will have to work today and even have to miss the world cup soccer game of the Dutch this afternoon if things turn out as bad as they seem at the moment... fingers-crossed.
